While having a high-quality laptop is essential, what has swiped the market in recent years is the ability to purchase a second portable monitor to help with all kinds of user needs. People who travel a lot or who enjoy watching or doing things on a second screen have seen a boom in 2018 as in the portable monitor market, and it does not look like it will be slowing down anytime soon.
Sure, we agree that there is still much space where these monitors can improve, but remember, that only a few years ago we only had laptops that could be portable enough to fit our traveling needs, so most people that needed a second monitor due to their needs, had to purchase a second laptop. Today we have a whole different story. The portable monitor or traveling monitor market has never seen such amazing competition, and we all know stiff competition drives down prices and puts out the best of the best on almost a monthly basis.
So, you might be in the market to get yourself a portable monitor, but you are wondering what you should be looking for. Specifically, what kinds of features and at what range they should be, what is considered to be the standard today, and what is supposed to be the accepted price range that goes for specific features.
While we won’t be reviewing any specific portable monitor, for that you can follow the link to our CTT reviews, we will be listing the monitors that have the best features so that you may decide which ones offer the things you need the most and which ones fall under your budget.
Without further ado, let’s list down all the features a useful portable monitor should have:
The Big Screen
As with all monitors a big screen is an essential thing to look out when buying a portable monitor. For the last couple of years, we have had the standard set at 14 inches when it comes to portable monitors, but in 2018 the 15-inch monitors have cemented their stay, and you can even find amazing monitors that are 16 inches at a reasonable price range. The largest portable monitor currently on the market is the AOC E2251FWU (22″, 1080p). However, its picture quality is lacking compared to many other models in the 15.6 or 16-inch range.
As one should be on the look for a big screen, a big resolution is the second thing that every portable monitor buyer should be interested in. Having a big screen means nothing if you don’t have a good picture quality, and this is where the high resolution comes into play. If you plan to have a full HD resolution portable monitor, be prepared to spend big bucks. On the other hand, if you plan to use your mobile monitor for web browsing than you don’t need to worry as much. A good rule is that if you are on the market to find a quality portable monitor that will serve you right for a few years down the line, then you should invest in a monitor that can give you the biggest resolution that you can afford.
Connectivity is something that many people neglect when it comes to their devices. It’s important to note that there are many monitors on the market and they all need to be connected to something so that they can work. While some monitors offer only a USB 3.0 connectivity, others also offer an HDMI port and the USB type-C port as well.
If you want a monitor that will be compatible with almost any device you have or might get in the future, then look for the ones that have several different methods of connecting with your other devices. For gamers, this means that they should get one with an HDMI port, for Apple product users, the USB type-C port and for everyone else the USB 3.0 connection should be the bare minimum.
A quality portable monitor does not just offer you itself in the package, but in fact, they should come with stands that can be either mounted on the wall or placed in many different situations. A monitor without a stand is very difficult to use, and while there are some with the bare minimum attached already to them, the truly high-quality monitors come with their stand and even with several ones that can have multifunctional applicability. If your monitor does not have a stand, it’s not too bad to shell out the extra cash to get one.
